If you've ever wanted to build a sprawling, wealthy empire that outpaces rivals in both cultural influence and scientific progress without picking up a sword first, civilization 7 siam is made for you. I’ve spent close to 40 hours testing different playstyles with Siam over my last few Civ 7 runs, and I’ve figured out exactly how to leverage their unique perks to crush even the hardest deity difficulty opponents. Most players sleep on Siam because their bonuses don’t look flashy at first glance, but they’re secretly one of the most flexible top-tier civs in the entire game right now.
Core Civilization 7 Siam Unique Bonuses and Perks
Before you jump into a Siam run, you need to understand exactly how their unique traits work together to create their signature playstyle. All three of their unique perks are designed to reward players who prioritize city-state diplomacy over early aggression, and they stack far better than most casual players realize:
A lot of new players miss how stacked these perks are together, especially the free envoy bonus. That means you can lock in suzerain status of 2 to 3 small city-states within the first 50 turns of the game, long before any other civ has the envoy count to contest you. You don't have to dedicate early production to building religious units either, if you don't want to go for a full religion win. I’ve had runs where I skipped building a single campus until turn 120, and still had higher science output than the civ that spammed 3 campuses in their capital, just from suzerain bonuses alone.
Best Early-Game Playstyles for Siam
Your first 30 turns as Siam will make or break the rest of your run, so you don't want to waste your early advantages. First, prioritize sending your first scout to uncover as many city-states as possible, instead of wandering around looking for barbarian camps first. Every new city-state you meet gives you a free envoy, so you can rack up 4 to 6 envoys in the first 20 turns alone if you're fast. But if you do run into a lot of barbarians early, you can send your starting warrior to handle camps while your scout focuses on uncovering city-states first.
Next, pick the Patronage policy card as soon as you unlock the Political Philosophy civic, that doubles the bonuses you get from city-states you're suzerain of. If you pair that with Siam's base suzerain bonus, you're getting +2 science and +2 culture per city-state, which is equivalent to building two extra campuses and two extra theater squares in every single one of your cities. You don't even need to build those districts early if you have 3 or 4 suzerainty locks, you can dump that production into expanding your empire or building infrastructure instead.
If you're playing on a map with lots of small islands, try to settle coastal cities first, Siam's bonuses work just as well on water maps as they do on land, as long as you can reach city-states early. Also, don't sleep on the War Elephant unit if you get rushed early. It doesn't need horses, so you can build a small force of 2 or 3 of them to fend off even aggressive civs like Rome or Mongolia in the medieval era, no resource grinding required.
Optimal Victory Paths for Siam Runs
Siam is one of the only civs in Civ 7 that can pull off every victory type with minimal adjustments to your playstyle, but there are two paths that are far stronger than the rest. First, Cultural Victory is the most natural fit for Siam, by a long shot. The Wat Phra Kaew gives you extra culture and tourism from religious art, and your suzerain bonuses give you enough extra culture to unlock civics 20% to 30% faster than rival civs. You don't need to build tons of theater squares, you just need to fill your Wat Phra Kaew cities with great works of art and religious relics, and your tourism output will blow every other civ out of the water. You can even use your extra faith to buy great artists and writers directly, cutting down the time you wait for great people to spawn by half.
Second, Scientific Victory is just as easy, if you prioritize suzerainty of science-focused city-states. The extra science per city-state adds up fast, especially if you pair it with the Research Grants policy card in the mid-game. I once finished a scientific victory on deity difficulty 40 turns faster than the second place civ, just by locking in 3 science city-states by turn 80. You don't have to worry about keeping up with rival civ's research speeds, because your city-state bonuses will put you ahead for 90% of the run.
Domination victories are doable, but they're not ideal, since you lose suzerain bonuses if you get denounced by other civs for warmongering. Religious victories work if you want to lean into the faith bonus from Sukhothai Inscriptions, but you'll have to dedicate more early production to missionaries and apostles, which slows down your expansion.
Common Siam Playstyle Mistakes to Avoid
Even with all their strengths, it's easy to waste Siam's bonuses if you fall into common player traps. First, don't ignore city-state requests just because they seem small. If a city-state asks you to kill a nearby barbarian camp or build a trade route to them, do it as soon as you can. That extra envoy you get from completing the request is enough to lock in suzerain status before another civ can send their own envoys. Losing a suzerain bonus to a rival civ because you ignored a 1-turn request is one of the most frustrating mistakes you can make with Siam.
Second, don't waste your early faith on buying religious units if you're not going for a religious victory. You're better off saving that faith to buy great people or district buildings in the mid-game, which gives you way more long-term value. Spending 200 faith on a great scientist in the industrial era will speed up your victory far more than spending that same faith on 4 apostles early on, unless you're actively pushing a religion win.
Third, don't build more than one or two War Elephants unless you're actively being invaded. They become obsolete pretty quickly in the renaissance era, and you're better off saving that production for campuses, theater squares or trade ports. The last big mistake I see all the time is players picking the wrong pantheon for Siam. You don't need to pick a faith-generating pantheon, since you get plenty of faith from your leader ability and Wat Phra Kaew. Pick a pantheon that gives you extra production or food instead, like Fertility Rites, to speed up your early expansion.
At the end of the day, civilization 7 siam is perfect for players who like flexible, low-stress playstyles that don't force you to commit to a single victory path in the first 10 turns. You don't have to micromanage every district or fight constant wars to win, you just have to leverage your city-state bonuses and unique perks to outpace your rivals slowly but surely. If you've been struggling to win on higher difficulties with more micro-heavy civs, give Siam a try in your next run. You might be surprised at how easy it is to climb the difficulty ranks once you get the hang of their playstyle.
